Kodaikanal (TamilNadu, India)
Located in the Kerala border of Western Ghats , 6,854ft above sea level, Kodaikanal is the only hill station in India, established by the Americans. Most of the tourism here is centered around the star-fish shaped lake.
A few attractions:
- Coaker’s Walk – A strip of paved road on the steep southern mountainside.
- Bryant Park – A botanical Garden set up by The British.
- Pillar Rocks – Most popular attraction of Kodaikanal, a 400ft high vertical column of three rocks.
- Silver Cascade – 7km outside town, formed by the backwaters of the Kodai lake, this is the most popular waterfall of Kodaikanal.
- Perumal Peak – 12km away from the town, this is the highest peak here at 7,874ft – the only legit way to get high.
Ooty (TamilNadu, India)
Ooty sits at the centre point of the Nilgiri (Blue Mountain) ranges, at the heights of 7,440ft above the sea level. Ooty, the Scotland of the East or The Queen of the Blue Mountains, is one of the most popular destinations in India. Ooty is a series of piquant montages: the sun lighting up one hill even as the other beside remains shrouded in green velvet. Mountain ponies chomping grassby the kerbside; the sharp fragrance of ghostly pines lining a mist-laden road; acacias in bloom; the bright gold of witches broom dotting every hill; the aroma of hot filter coffee and even hotter sambhar (a famous south-Indian dish).
A few attractions:
- Botanical Graden : South-India’s most popular hill station has a well laid-out with myriad ornamental plants and flowers. The main attraction of the garden is the fossilized tree trunk- all of 20 million years old.
- The Rose garden is all of 10 acres, and in winter when the 1,919 varieties of roses of al hues, red, pink, orange, pale green, even black are out, a stroll in this scented garden is an unforgettable experience.
- The Ooty lake, along with the lake garden, 2.5km long, constructed by Mr.John Sullivan, the former Collector and founder of Ooty, is one of the main attractions here.
- Dodda Betta- Climb up the highest peak in the Blue Mountains at 8,606ft, 10 km from the town. Dodda Betta, commands the juncture f the Western and Eastern Ghats offers unmatched vistas of the Nilgiris.
- Wenlock Downs: The most popular picnic spot, is a vast expanse of (around 20,000acres) of undulating landscape which used to be the ground for the Ooty Hunt, now a great walk along grassy knolls and quiet roads.
Alappuzha (Kerala, India)
With the Arabian Sea in the west and a vast network of lakes, lagoons and fresh-water rivers criss-crossing it, Alappuzha is a district of Immense natural beauty. Known as the Venice of the Esat, this backwater country is also home to diverse flora and fauna. Alappuzha is also famous for its boat races, beaches, marine products and coir industry. Kuttanadu, the rice bowl of Kerala in alappuzha is one of the few places in the world where farming is done below sea level.

- The Vembanadu Lake: The lake, an enchanting picnic spot and a fast developing backwater tourism destination, provides boating, fishing and exhilarating sight seeing experiences. House-boat cruises take you to a serene world where you feel complete harmony with nature.
- Kumarakom bird sanctuary: Located on the banks of the Vembanadu Lake, this bird sanctuary , an ornithologist’s paradise, is a favorite haunt of migratory birds like the Siberian strok, Egret, Darter, Heron and Teal.
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala, India)
The capital city of Kerala, having a long shoreline with internationally renowned beaches, historic monuments, backwater stretches and a rich cultural heritage make this district a much sought-after destination.
A few attractions:
- Kovalam Beach : This internationally well-known beach consists of adjacent crescent beaches. The southern most, known as the Light House beach is the most popular one.
- Agasthyakoodam : Part of the Sahyadri range of mountains, Agasthyakoodam is the second highest peak in kerala, at a height of 1,890 metres above the sea level. Teeming with wildlife, the forests of Agasthyakoodam abound in rare medicinal plants and herbs and brilliantly hued orchids. This bird-watcher’s paradise can be perfectly enjoyed through a trekking in the forest.
Idukki(Kerala, India)
A landlocked district, Idukki is one of the most nature rich areas of Kerala. Idukki offers diverse attractions like wildlife sanctuaries, hill stations, spice plantation tours, mountain treks, elephant rides etc. Idukki has a large population of tribal, the main tribes being Muthuvan, Malayarayan, Mannan, Paliyan, Urali, Ulladan, Malavedan and Malampandaram.
A few attractions:
- Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and Tiger Reserve, Thekkady - Lying close to the plantations, in the rich jungles of Periyar in Thekkady is one of the most fascinating natural wildlife reserves. Spread across 77sq.km, of which 360 sq.km is thick evergreen forest, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary was declared a Tiger Reserve.
- Munnar - Munnar, 1,600 metres above sea level, is situated at the confluence of three mountain streams – Muthirappuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala. Sprawling Tea Plantations, Picture book towns, makes this hill station a perfect resort town. Among the exotic flora, here is the Neelakkurinji, the flower bathes the hill in every twelve year.
- Eravikulam Natioanal Park : The 97sq.km park is situated near Munnar and is the home to the Nilgiri Tahr, a fast becoming extinct species. The Anamudy Peak, 2695 metres high, the highest peak in South-India, is located in the southern region of the park.
- Top Station: 1700 metre above sea level, this highest point in the Munnar-Kodaikanal Road offers a panoramic view of the nature.
- Marayur: This is the only place in Kerala that has a natural growth of Sandal wood trees.
The splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullapperiyar Dam adds to the charm of the park. This is the only sanctuary in India where you can have the unique experience of viewing wildlife at close quarters from the safety of a boat on the lake. The greatest attraction of the lake is the herds of wild elephants that come down to play in the lake.

Wayanadu (Kerala, India)
Wayanadu is one of the districts in Kerala that have been able to retain its pristine nature. Hidden away in the hills of this land are some of the oldest tribal communities as yet untouched by civilization. This district is famous for its picturesque mist-clad hill-stations, sprawling spice plantations, luxuriant forests and rich cultural traditions.
A few attractions:
- Kuruva Islands : This 950 acre, uninhabited island on the eastward bound Kabani River is an picnic spot. The wooded stretch of land is home to species of birds, orchids and herbs.
- Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary : This sanctuary has a wide variety of animals.
- Pakshipathalam : This place can be accessed only by trekking. Rare species of birds can be sighted from the watch tower of this bird sanctuary.
- Chembra peak : At 2100 metre above mean sea level, Chembra is the highest peak in Wayanad and is an ideal area for trekking.
- Wayanadu Wildlife Sanctuary : This is contiguous to the protected area network of Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka State. Rich in bio-diversity, the sanctuary is an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which has bee established with the specific objective of conserving the biological heritage of the region.
Silentvalley Natioanl Park (Kerala, India)
The 90 sq.km national park is believed to be the sole surviving bit of evergreen forests in the Sahya ranges. The peculiarity of the silentvalley National Park that it is devoid of even the chirping of cicads. This virgin forest is home to a number of endangered flora and fauna like the lion-tailed monkey. The beautiful river Kunthi flows in this park with crystal clear water in all the times.
Athirapally and Vazhachal Waterfalls :
At the entrance to the Sholayur ranges, this 80ft high waterfall is a popular picnic spot. This is the highest of the waterfall sin South-India too. Just a short drive from Athirapally, the picturesque Vazhachal waterfalls is close to dense green forests and is a part of the Chalakudy river. Arthirapally and Vazhachal are the most famous of Kerala which attract tourists in plenty.
