Botanical Garden
An ecological study and research centre....
Hundreds of plant species are precariously placed in the list of ‘critically endangered species’ and are on the grave threat of extinction. It is quite possible that at least a few of these would have already become extinct. Those, which survive, would also be in very negligible number in some remote areas.
Shanthivanam, therefore, felt the need for setting up a Botanical Garden with the aim of bringing a comprehensive collection of plant species under one roof. Therefore, initiatives were taken to set up a botanical garden in the outskirts of Chennai. An exclusive zone for conserving and propagating the endangered species would be an important feature of this garden. Descriptive boards would be provided for each and every species providing complete details including local name, botanical name, climatic conditions, lifespan etc. This would be enormously useful for the students and researchers visiting the garden.
Priority will be given community outreach programmes so that the community would be involved in a wholesome way. Effective community would enhance the community’s role and enable them to realize that their inherent role in providing solution to the environmental problems. An ‘Ecological Study Centre’ would also be functioning in the site of the Botanical Garden. The following facilities would also be forming a part of the garden cum eco-centre.
- Medicinal plants (over 750 varieties)
- Orchid Park
- Endangered species Conservation Centre
- Water conservation
- Organic farming
- Library cum Information centre
- Spiritual Retreat (Yoga & Meditation centre)
- Seed bank
- Walkers zone
- Botanical Garden (with over 1000 species)
Library cum Information Centre
The Information centre would maintain a complete list of known plant species with all relevant information pertaining the species. The centre would also be providing all assistance to students and researchers willing to take up projects in the site. Surveys and studies would be undertaken on a regular basis to improve the knowledge base. Development of models with protocols for plant conservation would also be provided. The centre would also provide assistance for all efforts in the area of identification and conservation of plant diversity. Thorough documentation would be strictly adhered to.
Spiritual Retreat
The serene atmosphere in the garden would be very conducive and provide the right ambience for mental and spiritual relaxation. Yoga cum Meditation centre would be functional in the garden premises for this purpose. Nothing could be more refreshing and rejuvenating than to train your mind and body in this wonderful atmosphere.
Ecological Study Centre
The venue of the garden is also proposed to be declared as an ‘Ecological Study Centre’. In addition to the botanical garden, it is proposed to make the whole area as a model eco-friendly region. Pilot projects on organic farming, seed development, waste management etc. would be forming part of the study centre. Also, water conservation facilities would be provided to cater to the needs of the centre.
